At the time of marriage, my wife and I had decided to have a kid after five years of marriage. That required pregnancy after four years and three months after it. And we easily managed that trying to match the delivery date with the date of our fifth marriage anniversary. Just for fun!
We both wanted to have a daughter very passionately. But we didn’t know what it was going to be. It could be either of the two, a daughter or a son. But then, we were extremely curious to know it beforehand in our eagerness. Sex-determination tests were illegal to get done.

The only alternative left was to scan the movements of the baby in the uterus on an ultrasound monitor visually. That too after many months of pregnancy! And even then, it wasn’t easy to do as it required extreme patience to spot a penis.
At times the visual scanning needed to wait for as long as one full hour to predict it with some confidence. One needed waiting for the position of the embryo to make it possible spotting the penis if it was there.
And its presence was always a surer test than its absence. Hence checking the embryo for determining if it was a male was easier than checking if it was a female.
Also, there were no provisions provided to record a graphical display of the positions while checking them live. In fact, they were intentionally not provided so that the ultrasound tests couldn’t be abused for determining sex before birth.

People in our country abused sex-determination tests for ascertaining if it was a male. Unluckily our decadent culture largely preferred a male child to a female one. Birth of a boy was widely rejoiced whereas the birth of a girl was taken as a burden to carry. Sex-determination tests made it possible to get the pregnancy aborted in case it confirmed a girl child. It started skewing the male-female ratio in the society leading to a huge gap between the two. That was the reason sex-determination tests had been made illegal to get done.
We went to a female gynecologist for a regular ultrasound test meant to check if the position had no complications. It took just a few minutes. The position showed it was perfect in its development and there was no cause for worry. As the gynecologist noted down about the ultrasound report on her prescription, I came up with my curiosity.

“REALLY?” her tone immediately changed like she had got the most pleasant shock of her life. She said, “You are the first parents in my entire career who said these words. They are music to my ears. It’s almost unbelievable for me. Anyway, come with me.”

She got her next appointments postponed to a later hour. Then she took us back to her ultrasound laboratory and made my wife lie down on the bed again. She once again switched her system with her ultrasound monitor on and started looking to spot a penis intently. Also, she very cordially made me sit beside her and kept explaining as she went on scanning the changing positions.
It took her more than an hour to reach a probable conclusion. She hadn’t been able to spot a penis through the entire 360-degree rotation of the embryo during that time. The absence of a penis was what we were looking for so passionately.
In the end, she declared, “There is 99.99 percent probability you got a girl child in your womb.”

I sprang up with joy and almost started dancing. The doctor kept looking at our enthused faces with a satisfied smile.
She took us back to her consultation room and congratulated us once again for having our most passionate desire fulfilled.
I took out my wallet to pay her for what all she had done for more than an hour. But she asked me to put it back in my pocket.
“This is a gift to you from my side. You kindled a new hope in my heart that things may change for good. You have already paid me way more than I ever expected from you. Go get ready to welcome your daughter,” she called for her next patient as she said this to us.
I learned how people love you beyond all limits when you passionately love what they love passionately too!
