I was around 40 years old when a close friend of mine gave me a phone call from his town. They had married around five years ago and had no kids yet.
“I don’t know what to do,” his feeble voice laden with depression reached my ear through the phone receiver.
“What happened?” I went worried as he had never sounded so low before.
“I had never thought I would have to face it,” sounded like he couldn’t find words to explain his predicament.
“Tell me what happened,” I insisted again.
“I just caught my wife red-handed with someone else,” his voice was just sounding lost somewhere deep within himself.

“What did you say to her?” I immediately asked.
“Nothing! I don’t know what to say,” he was totally lost in his intrigue.
“And what did she say to you?” I came up with my next question.
“Nothing! She doesn’t seem to know what to say,” he said on her behalf.
“Are you angry?” I wanted to know his emotional state.
“I am perplexed,” his tone was absolutely indecisive.
“Are you in two minds?” I tried to put words in his mouth.
“I am in twenty of them. I am almost gone blank. Am I losing my mind?” He answered me with a question.
“Try to speak to your wife,” I suggested.
“She is not in a state to speak either. I am getting scared,” his condition was really bad.
“Give phone to her,” I thought I should rather speak to her.

“Hello,” her voice came.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“What should I do?” she was equally out of her mind.
“Do you want to continue together or…,” I left my sentence incomplete.
“I don’t know,” she mumbled.
“Put phone on speaker,” I thought I should speak to them together.
As they switched the speaker on, I immediately suggested, “Come to my place by the next bus available.”
There was no reply for a while. I asked again, “Will you?”
“Okay,” the two voices came together.
“You should be here by tomorrow. And stay with me for the next few days,” I gave my verdict for the time being.

Next day, they were there. They were not in a position to initiate talking to each other. In fact, they needed a catalyst to make it happen. And that was the role I was playing.
“Do you people want to continue together or break your relationship?” I started with the most pressing question.
They looked into each other’s eyes. Then she said, “He has every right to turn me out of his life.”
“Do you want that?” I steered the talk to what she wanted.
“No, I don’t. But if he says, I will,” said she.
“Do you want that?” I asked him.
“I don’t want to punish her. But I am feeling I have been punished. What had I done wrong?” he asked to himself.

“Nothing! I did it all wrong. I messed up the whole thing,” she was in a pensive mood.
“Do you regret it?” I tried to put words in her mouth.
“Surprisingly not,” her eyes went wide open.
“Will you do it again?” I questioned further.
“No,” said she.
“What do you say?” I looked toward him.
“If she says she won’t do it again, it’s okay for me. I am not bent upon making her regret,” he gave his verdict.
“Are you okay with what he says?” it was time for her to answer.
“But why is he letting me go unscathed. It’s making me feel guilty. I expected him to hit me hard,” she murmured.
“That’s what he is like. I have known him since ages. Haven’t you known him yet? He never acts with vengeance,” I said.
“In fact, I love him,” she blurted her feelings out.
“As if I don’t! Do you really know how much I love you?” he blurted out too.
“So, you people are not breaking up. Am I right?” I presented a resolution.
Both nodded in the affirmative.
“I am sorry,” she spoke direct to him this time.
“Never say sorry again,” he held her up in his arms.

“Shall we open a bottle of whisky on the occasion?” I proposed. Everyone seemed to agree. And soon the dull and gloomy atmosphere changed into a vibrant party mood.
While sipping my whisky, I came up with a curious question to my friend’s wife.
“Tell me one thing I am curious about. What exactly was the feeling that drove you toward adultery?” I looked at her as I waited for an answer.
She kept thinking for a while. Then she took a big sip and kept her glass back on the table. Taking the rest at the back of the chair, she came up with one single word, “Adventure!”

She further added, “I recognized it after you asked it to me just now. It was a feeling of adventure that drove me toward breaking the rules of marriage.”
“Strange!” she repeated wondering about her adventure and picked up her glass to have another big sip out of it.
